Today's forecast here in Oklahoma is calling for storms and lowering temps, and what goes better with a stormy Autumn day than a Magical Read? I say nothing, aside from a heavy blanket, hearty snackage, and a hot beverage!
I have chosen three captivating and bewitching books, that definitely need to be on your TBR list, and read before the 31st! Two of these are Top 10 status for me, and one I just finished yesterday!
All of these encompass Good vs Evil, Reputation vs True Self, and what it means to stand up for yourself by letting all pretenses fall away, and the vulnerability in finding your true, inner strength, especially when it is deemed "abnormal" or not the "popular" way/opinion.
First up, we have the the Harry Potter Series! This series is at the tip-top of my Top 10 fantasy-genre list! I have included below, the synopsis for the first in the series: Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone, for those who may not have read this series yet. I cannot tell you just how much love I have for this series, and if this will be your first time reading, you are in for the biggest and most wonderful adventure of your reading life! Or, if you are like me, you reread this series this nearly every year, and are always in the same awe you felt the first time you visited Hogwarts!
"Harry Potter's life is miserable. His parents are dead and he's stuck with his heartless relatives, who force him to live in a tiny closet under the stairs. But his fortune changes when he receives a letter that tells him the truth about himself: he's a wizard. A mysterious visitor rescues him from his relatives and takes him to his new home, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
After a lifetime of bottling up his magical powers, Harry finally feels like a normal kid. But even within the Wizarding community, he is special. He is the boy who lived: the only person to have ever survived a killing curse inflicted by the evil Lord Voldemort, who launched a brutal takeover of the Wizarding world, only to vanish after failing to kill Harry.
Though Harry's first year at Hogwarts is the best of his life, not everything is perfect. There is a dangerous secret object hidden within the castle walls, and Harry believes it's his responsibility to prevent it from falling into evil hands. But doing so will bring him into contact with forces more terrifying than he ever could have imagined.
Full of sympathetic characters, wildly imaginative situations, and countless exciting details, the first installment in the series assembles an unforgettable magical world and sets the stage for many high-stakes adventures to come."
The second on my list to share with you is the All Souls Trilogy! This trilogy is everything I could ever want; Witches, Vampires, Goblins, and so very much more! This is also a Top 10 for me! Below is the blurb for the first book in the series: A Discovery of Witches:
"Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery, so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks, but her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries--and she's the only creature who can break its spell."
The last book, is one that I actually just finished yesterday, and was so pleasantly surprised that I substituted it for another book in this post last-minute! Caraval is the first in a duology, about a magical game that happens once a year and is by invitation only, yet nothing is at it seems!
"Remember, it’s only a game…
Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval…beware of getting swept too far away."
